New youth basketball league debuts in Donora
By the MVI
Yancey Taylor’s dream of having basketball taught and enjoyed by hundreds of Mon Valley youths got off to a rousing start Sunday on the court where the former Ringgold star honed his game.
The We Care For Kids Sports Summer Basketball League opened with six games on the newly renovated court at Highland Terrace. There was a festive fanfare that included a couple hundred fans, along with food and drink vendors.
The league, which features 32 boys and girls teams that encompass over 350 kids, tipped off under a hot, sunny sky.
Taylor, the driving force for the league, was quick to distribute the credit to many others.
“This is such a beautiful thing and a year ago, who would have ever thought this would happen here in Donora,” said Taylor, who serves as executive director for the league and coaches a handful of teams.
“This is great for the kids. That’s my number one concern — the kids,” he said. “And this is also Donora. When was the last time you saw this many people outside at Highland Terrace?”
