With the help of community interest and donations, a former World War II memorial could return to its former location in Monessen.
That memorial, called Toussaint’s Corner, is now propped up against an outside wall of the city’s fire station on Donner Avenue.
It used to be part of a war memorial that sat at the corner of Marion Avenue and Grand Boulevard in the front yard of Monessen’s Hilltop Fire Station.
While going through old family photos a few weeks ago, Monessen’s Mayor Matt Shorraw found two pictures of the war memorial. One featured his grandmother, Irene Sivak Shorraw, and another was taken of the site decorated for Memorial Day.
Shorraw said the photos were likely taken in the 1950s.
Now that the memorial is no longer in its original location and is just sitting propped up against the fire station, Shorraw would like to see if he can generate some interest from residents to get enough donations to return it to its home.
The prominent corner spot of Marion Avenue and Grand Boulevard could once again be home to the Toussaint’s Corner Memorial and there could be a rededication.
It was taken down after it was struck by a vehicle decades ago, but was never returned to its location.
