It was never a surprise for Luke Santo to see Carlow University head basketball coach Tim Keefer at Frazier High School games, considering his son Zach is the Commodores’ head coach.
With graduation looming, Santo isn’t quite ready to say farewell to the Keefers yet.
Santo, the Commodores’ point guard, recently signed his letter of intent to continue his academic and athletic career at Carlow. There, he’ll become a player on Tim Keefer’s squad.
“The top reason I chose Carlow was definitely the coach,” Santo said. “Just being around the Keefers all of high school, they’re family now.”
Santo, the son of Tom and Candie Santo of Perryopolis, said he will major in human biology at the Pittsburgh school. He said playing close to home is a bonus, but wasn’t a priority.
“Coach Keefer has had a chance to watch me for four years. He knows that I’m a true point guard and he loves how unselfish I am,” Santo said. “I think knowing him the way I do will give me an advantage. I already know the offenses he wants us to run and we’re already on the same page as far as that goes.
“I’m glad I’m playing close to home, but it wasn’t a priority. I just wanted to go somewhere that was the right fit for me.”
