Monessen: Mozer defeats Shorraw in GOP write-in race

There will be just one candidate on the ballot in November for the position of mayor of Monessen — Ron Mozer.
Mozer, who won the Democratic Party nomination in last month’s primary, has also captured the nomination of the Republican Party through write-in votes.
Mozer earned 111 write-in votes from Republicans and will appear on the ballot on the Republican and Democratic sides.
Incumbent Mayor Matt Shorraw lost the Democratic nomination for a second term to Mozer in the primary by a 783-522 margin. On the Republican side, Shorraw earned 63 write-in votes, which wouldn’t have been enough to appear on the general election ballot regardless of Mozer’s totals.
Potential write-in candidates must garner at least as many votes as the number of signatures they would have been required to collect on their election petitions had they filed to run as a registered candidate.
In cities like Monessen, candidates must get 100 signatures. So even without Mozer’s total, Shorraw would not have had enough votes to qualify for the general election ballot.
