Employees of the Ohio-based Cleveland-Cliffs Inc., which owns the Monessen coke battery, formerly known as ArcelorMittal, received good news late last week.
Cleveland-Cliffs announced its plans to recall employees who were laid off last year after the plant went idle due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
The Monessen plant, located on Donner Avenue, produces coke, which is a fuel used in the steelmaking process that is created by heating coal in the absence of air.
Cleveland-Cliffs Vice President of Investor Relations Paul Finan said the restart stems from a renewed strong demand for the plant’s coke products.
“We have put in motion the process of restarting the Monessen coke battery,” Finan said. “We expect to recall the remaining workforce later this month and plan to begin production in August 2021. We are recalling approximately 100 workers.”
