Betty J. McWilliams – Monessen
Swing low, sweet chariot came on May 26, 2021, and carried Betty J. McWilliams, 89, of Monessen, home. She was the daughter born Nov. 23, 1931, to the late Herbert and Elnora Ricks Flythe. At a young age, Betty J. was baptized and received salvation and joined Mt. Calvary Baptist Church of Monessen. She was a former member of the Calvary Gospel Chorus, was president emeritus of the Usher Board, a former member and past president of the American Legion Ladies Auxiliary, Post No. 691, served as financial secretary of the Elks Okay Lodge No. 697. While working for the Veterans Hospital in Pittsburgh, Betty J. was also a member of the American Federation of Government Employees, Local No. 2028 and served as sergeant-at-arms and steward. Betty J. was a member of the Mon Valley Branch NAACP Executive Board, a member of Senior Citizens of Monessen, Legacy of Monessen and the Westmoreland Agency on Aging. Betty J. was married to the late Oscar McWilliams. She is survived by one son, Irvin (Carman) McWilliams of Monessen; one daughter, Dawenda Lee Flythe of Greensburg; five grandchildren, Arleen, Sheree, Jarrell (Germone), Tekisha (Jayson Roy) and Cicely; and seven great-grandchildren. Betty J. was preceded in death by her husband, Oscar McWilliams; son, Thomas McWilliams; brothers, Earl and John Quincy Flythe; sister, Doris Redwine; and a grandson, Carlos McWilliams. Visitation will be from 9 to 11 a.m. Friday June 4, 2021, with a service to follow at 11 a.m. at Mt. Calvary Baptist Church, 230 Reed Ave., Monessen. Pastor Bishop Karl Jackson will be doing the eulogy, with interment to follow in Belle Vernon Cemetery.
