A new tradition has come out of the COVID-19 pandemic as the City of Monessen and its school district will hold a second annual senior class parade this month.

The Class of 2021’s parade will line up at about 7:30 p.m. June 11 at the Monessen High School/Middle School Parking Lot on State Road. Students are encouraged to decorate their cars.

The parade was born of a desire to celebrate the Class of 2020 because pandemic restrictions drastically changed the way graduation could be held.

School and city officials say the parade was a huge success and they are excited to bring it to the community again.

Once again, the parade will follow graduation and will traverse Monessen’s neighborhoods by following selected school bus routes.

Residents are encouraged to watch the parade from their porches or sidewalks, while social distancing and following COVID-19 guidelines from the CDC and Pennsylvania Department of Health.

“We want to be able to honor our seniors and commend them for their hard work,” Mayor Matt Shorraw said. “We’re very proud of our seniors, and we are proud to call them Monessen citizens.”
