Fire hydrants may be purchased using new tax in Rostraver Township

Sections of Rostraver Township without fire hydrants may soon have enhanced fire protection.
The township commissioners Wednesday discussed using funds from the fire protection tax enacted this year to install up to 15 hydrants in under-served areas of the community.
“This will be the first item where residents will be able to see where the fire tax is going,” said commissioners’ President John Lorenzo.
Other disbursements from the fire tax fund have gone toward payments on area fire trucks.
Lorenzo said the new hydrants are slated for installation on a section of Rostraver Road from Virginia Drive to Rankins Crossroads and at the Collingate Manor housing development. Those areas have been without hydrants, forcing firefighters to rely on tanker trucks to fight fires in there, Lorenzo said.
