The Belle Vernon Area Class of 2021 is leaving its mark on the high school in the form of a mural on a wall of the cafeteria.
Art teacher Andrew Fecik said murals featuring the BVA logo and senior handprints have graced the stairwells at the high school for years, but over the past few years, the concept has changed to include a student-designed mural surrounded by the class handprints. This year’s mural ties together school events, world events and personal memories.
“The image was a collaboration of a group of seniors from different classes,” Fecik said. “They did sketches and we combined them and refined them several times.
The students then printed out pages to do color studies and further refined the project, taking most of the fall semester to finalize the design. The work of transferring the mural from conceptual design to a painting on the wall started in January.
“It really was a group effort,” Fecik said. “It’s kind of like a time capsule. It’s really neat.”
