Monessen: City may install dog park

Monessen might consider putting a dog park in City Park.

There is an unused wooded area near the tennis parks that could be used for a dog park area and some residents have expressed an interest, according to Mayor Matt Shorraw.

The proposed area would be between City Park Road and Shady Avenue. It’s overgrown, but the city residents who are interested plan to try to raise money for the potential project, Shorraw said at this month’s Monessen council meeting.

Shorraw said the residents aren’t looking for city funding. and he didn’t think council action is necessary at this point.

“They’re just looking for our blessing,” Shorraw said. “I think it would be a good selling point for Monessen.”

If a dog park were to go in the wooded area, there would need to be some work done that would require some funding, Shorraw said. He said there is a non-matching grant available that he’s looking into. There are also foundation grants available for such things, he said.

The biggest cost will be a fence to encircle the dog park to keep the pooches inside. Another expense will be finding a way to get water to the area for fountains. There is a water line on Shady Avenue that could be utilized, Shorraw said.
