Fishing derby attracts young anglers

Fishing might be a relaxing activity, but don’t tell that to the more than 100 kids who showed up Saturday morning at the Noble J. Dick Aquatorium in Monongahela.
Young and old anglers took part in the Valley Inn Sportsmen’s Association’s annual Kids Fishing Derby, which featured children ages 1 to 15 competing to reel in the biggest catch of the day.
Trophies were awarded in each age group for largest fish. New this year, thanks to Volker’s Auto Body shop, one lucky kid took home a trophy for catching the smallest fish.
While the children competed, their parents fished alongside them and provided encouragement.
“We try to give every kid a prize,” said Valley Inn Sportsmen’s Association President and Monongahela Councilman Rusty Polonoli. “We give out numerous fishing poles and tackle boxes. Each kid leaves with something.”
Polonoli said the fishing derby was started by former Monongahela Mayor Bob Kepics approximately 15 years ago. As it grew in size, Kepics asked the Valley Inn Sportsmen’s Association to host the derby, and the annual event has been a Monongahela staple ever since, although it was canceled last year due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
“We get a fabulous turnout every year,” Polonoli said. “It’s a great community event. People show up at 7:30 a.m. and they’re ready to start fishing. I give the parents a lot of credit. The parents are right there fishing with them.”
