George James Kabay – Washington, formerly of Scenery Hill

George James Kabay, 86, of Washington, formerly of Scenery Hill, passed away Thursday, May 20, 2021, in his home. He was born March 15, 1935, at 400 Allen Ave., Donora, a son of the late John and Mary Slivka Kabay. A veteran, Mr. Kabay served with the U.S. Navy during the Korean War from July 1954 to July 1958. He received his master’s degree in education from California State Teachers College, now known as California University of Pennsylvania, and for 35 years, was a teacher for the Trinity School District. He was a member of Saint Katharine Drexel Parish, the parish choir and Knights of Columbus Council 5826. Mr. Kabay was also a member of the Pennsylvania State Education Association and the National Education Association. His wife, Carol Matthews Kabay, survives. They were married Nov. 10, 1962, at St. Michael’s Byzantine Greek Catholic Church in Donora. Also surviving are his three children, Michael Kabay (Michele), Rebecca Spina (Bean) and Kathleen Pollock (Scott); grandchildren, Joshua, Matthew and Patrick Kabay, Jonathan and Rachel Spina and Jacob and Caroline Pollock; and several nieces and nephews. Deceased are his brothers, John, Michael and Edward Kabay; and a sister, Mary Sawicky. Friends are welcome from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday, May 23, at THOMPSON-MARODI FUNERAL HOME INC., 809 Main St., Bentleyville, 724-239-2255, where a prayer service will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, May 24, 2021, followed at 10:30 a.m. by a Mass of Christian burial at St. Katharine Drexel, 126 Church St., Bentleyville, with the Rev. Edward L. Yuhas, pastor, as celebrant. At the church, non-vaccinated individuals are required to wear masks or facial coverings and social distancing will be maintained. Interment will follow to Scenery Hill Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Saint Katharine Drexel Parish or a charity of one’s choice.
