Students at Elizabeth Forward High School had an opportunity to do some career exploration recently through a panel discussion with Olympus Energy employees.

The digital seminar gave students a chance to learn about the variety of careers in the energy industry while finding out about some paths that led to those careers.

Mike Huber, transition coordinator for the district, said his focus in the past has been on post-graduation job opportunities for students with special needs, but he has expanded the program to all students.

“We’re expanding it to everybody to build their career readiness,” he said.

Huber said the program focuses on awareness, exploration and preparation. The awareness phase involves students going through an assessment of their skills and interests, followed by deciding where they want to go and how to get there.

Academic choices are based around that self-assessment and as early as ninth grade students begin career observations, Huber said. He is currently working with about 60 area businesses.

“I’m now getting companies reaching out to me. Olympus Energy offered a panel discussion,” he said.
