Cecilia Pennline Sciortino is getting 102 very-special gifts for her birthday this year.
To commemorate the Charleroi resident turning 102 on May 28, her niece Jennifer Pennline helped organize a unique gift in her aunt’s honor.
They arranged to have 102 photos of her signed by loved ones, friends, neighbors and local businesses, firefighters and police officers. Cecilia will receive all of the photos — signed, sealed and delivered — to her doorstep before her birthday.
Born Cecilia Lombardi Pennline on May 28, 1919, Sciortino has lived her entire life in Charleroi. Her parents, Henry and Pauline, settled in the Mon Valley after immigrating from Statigliano, a small town near Naples, Italy. Henry found work at the Corning plant and they settled down to raise a family. Cecilia was the youngest of four girls in the family of eight children. She was born amid the 1918 Spanish flu pandemic — which lasted until 1920 — and is now witness to the coronavirus pandemic.
Her family hosted a drive-by parade for her 101st birthday last year. She and her late husband, Joe, raised two sons, Joseph and Henry. She has a host of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
