Riding a bicycle is a rite of passage for many children, and thanks to the Monongahela Area Revitalization Corporation, bike-riding youths will be steered in the right direction.
MARC will hold a bike safety event from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. Saturday in Dierken’s Pharmacy parking lot at 100 E. Main St. It is open to anyone under the age of 18 and will take place rain or shine.
The event made its debut in 2018, but was canceled in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Police officers from Monongahela, Carroll Township and the Washington County Sheriff’s Department will be on hand to place reflectors on kids’ bikes, perform bike inspections and hand out safety certificates and badges.
Kids will be given gift bags courtesy of Detorre’s Pizza, state Rep. Bud Cook, R-West Pike Run Township and Di’s Hometown Deli.
Kohl’s CARES and Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh have donated bicycle helmets to the event, and Washington County Salvation Army has donated four new bikes to be raffled.
New Eagle’s Pizza Station will be onsite handing out pizza slices, and Mon Valley Cycle will provide orange cones for the parking lot.
“It’s very important for kids to learn bike safety and they need to learn to be aware of their surroundings,” said MARC member and the event’s chairwoman Sarah O’Brien. “Anything can happen in a split second.”
