Belle Vernon Area pitcher Sophia Godzak and Burrell hurler Katie Armstrong engaged in a pitchers duel Wednesday at Plum High School.
The duo combined for 18 strikeouts, five walks and just eight total hits.
Armstrong and the Buccaneers captured a 3-2 victory on a walk-off single by Caroline Dynka in the eighth inning of a WPIAL Class 4A first-round matchup.
The ninth-seeded Leopards (10-10) managed just three hits and struck out 12 times in the contest. Neither team had a hit until Burrell broke through with one in the fourth.
“Their pitcher kept us off balance and that’s part of our game we have to work on,” BVA coach Tom Rodriguez said. “We need to hit better and move runners up. We didn’t even get the chance to, we couldn’t even get the first batter on.”
