No tax increase for Charleroi area property owners

Despite a tumultuous year for school board directors and administrators due to the pandemic, property owners in the Charleroi Area School District will not see a hike in their real estate taxes this year.

Directors unanimously approved a $26,064,515 spending plan for 2020-21 Tuesday.

The spending plan, which is about 1% larger than last year,  will keep property owners paying the same amount of taxes as last year, about $17 per $1,000 of assessed value of a home.

Business Manager Joseph Gudac said the district was not as negatively impacted financially by the pandemic as it expected to be.

“Last year’s budget was worst-case scenario,” Gudac said. “We had left school without any real idea of what the future looked like. We wanted to do no more or less than we had to, but it turned out a lot better than we expected.”

The spending plan includes about $10.5 million for personnel, $7 million for benefits,  $1.3 million for professional expenses, $300,000 for purchases for property, $918,673 for supplies, $426,500 for property and equipment, $2.8 million for dues and fees and $703,508 for debts. It also accounts for $10.2 million in local revenue, $14.7 million in state revenue and a little more than $1 million in federal revenue.
