Thomas Jefferson gave Chartiers Valley all it could handle in a WPIAL Class 5A first-round playoff game on Tuesday.
One swing of the bat in the sixth inning, however, sent the Colts on to the next round.
The 12th-seeded Jaguars came back from a four-run deficit before Zoey Mangan hit a grand slam to lead No. 5 Chartiers Valley to a 9-5 win at North Allegheny.
The Colts (13-7) loaded the bases on a single and two walks issued by TJ pitcher Alyssa McCormick in the sixth before Mangan smacked the first pitch she saw over the left field wall.
McCormick, a sophomore, struggled with control most of the night, putting six Chartiers Valley players on base via walks.
“When you’re in the playoffs, you can’t give teams walks,” TJ coach Heidi Karcher said. “I think the walks killed us. That just comes with inexperience as we have a really young team. We battled back, but you can’t give them that much in the beginning.”
