Elmunda ‘Munda’ Essey – Monessen

Elmunda “Munda” Essey, 97, of Monessen, died Friday, May 14, 2021, in Hallsworth House, Monessen. She was born on Feb. 14, 1924, in Clairton, the daughter of the late Albert and Catherine Owen George. Munda grew up in Clairton and was a 1941 graduate of Clairton High School. After moving to Monessen in 1946, she worked for Edmund’s Jewelers, Dudas Dental Clinic and the Shoe Salon. She was a member of the former St. Michael Syrian Orthodox Church in Monessen. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 68 years, Samuel Essey; two daughters, Linda and infant Sherri Essey; four brothers, George, Fred, Leslie and Martin George; and two sisters, Jean Thomas and Gloria George. She is survived by her son, Alan (Teri) Essey of Bentleyville; daughter, Ginger Gerdish of Charleroi; brother, Albert George Jr. of Clairton; three sisters, Georgina Naiser of Louisville, Ky., Victoria Khalil of Jefferson Hills and Catherine Chleboski of Gibsonia; four grandchildren, Jarrod (Katie) Essey, Cory (Mike) Motycki, Dillon Gerdish, and Chad (Laura) Gerdish; four great-grandchildren, Sadie, Sammy, William and Michael; and numerous nieces and nephews. Private family visitation and funeral services were held at DALFONSO-BILLICK FUNERAL HOME INC. AND CREMATION SERVICES, 441 Reed Ave., Monessen, with Father Fred Pfeil officiating. Interment followed in Mon Valley Memorial Park, Donora. Munda loved preparing and serving food to everyone, so her family asks that in her memory, you and your family share a meal together.
