Shoppers, foodies and chocoholics will descend upon Monongahela Saturday when the city holds its first-ever World of Chocolate tour.

The event, sponsored by the Monongahela Main Street Program, will be held from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. and will feature approximately 30 downtown businesses who will join in the celebration of all things chocolate.

The tour will feature shops and restaurants handing out and serving chocolate chip cookies, chocolate cake and chocolate-covered Italian doughnuts as well as drawings for chocolate pizza, chocolate-covered wine bottles and even chocolate-covered pickles.

There will also be chocolate-colored balloons, chocolate animal crackers, cookie flashlight keychains, coloring books featuring brown crayons and a beanbag game with custom graphics courtesy of Delmar Signs. Riverman Diver Dan will be there to hand out gold chocolate coins from his treasure chest.

Snowy’s Chocolates of Elizabeth will offer chocolate-making demonstrations at Sweets by Mrs. C.

“The idea is to get people circulating around downtown,” said Monongahela Main Street Program Executive Director Terry Necciai. “Why chocolate? Because it’s festive, it’s available and it’s not one business’ monopoly here.

“We were able to integrate all the different stores with specials. Chocolate was just a good excuse.”

To participate in the tour, shoppers should visit one of the featured stores or the World of Chocolate Tour Headquarters, located at Third and Main streets, between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. They will receive a map and a list of the participating stores. The map and list will also be available on street corners.
