An Elizabeth Forward High School senior has left her mark on her alma mater — in bright yellow paint.
Jaymee McKelvey, 18, the daughter of Jill and Jay McKelvey of Greenock, created a parallel parking practice area behind the high school as well as a series of car maintenance and safety videos. It was all done to obtain her Girl Scout Gold Award.
“The Gold Award has to have a community impact and it has to be sustainable, which was difficult because of the pandemic,” Jaymee said.
Jaymee kicked around a couple of ideas before settling on the parallel parking project, recalling her own difficulty learning that particular driving skill.
“I had to go to Thomas Jefferson High School to learn,” Jaymee said.
Jaymee worked with a private driving instructor, Gino Fagnilli, to develop the specifications for the parallel parking spot.
“I also made some informational and safety videos: how to check your oil, change tires, check the air in your tires and fill your washer fluid,” she said. “I didn’t know before I did this project and now I know.”
