Greater Washington County Food Bank: Three new programs set for July

Changes are coming to the Greater Washington County Food Bank, with three new outreach programs starting in July.

“With an outside organization overseeing the bulk distributions for Washington County, there are always populations that can’t access those bulk distributions,” said Justin McAtee, director of marketing for the GWCFB. “When we handled the bulk, we didn’t have the resources to handle the other distributions as well.”

Having the county turn the bulk distributions to community food pantries  over to the Greater Pittsburgh Food Bank frees up staffing at the GWCFB to address rural food deserts, short-term emergency needs and community food support for specialty groups such as veterans and people recuperating from medical procedures, McAtee said.

“We’re an independent nonprofit. We won’t be partnering with the Greater Pittsburgh Food Bank,” McAtee said. “We’re able to focus on the areas they may not be able to support.”
