As Belle Vernon Area head coach Tony Watson looked up at the scoreboard on West Mifflin’s home turf Thursday evening, he pinpointed one thing in particular his team struggled with.
“Nothing was as deflating as that three up there in the error column,” Watson said. “Errors and walks came back to bite us today.”
Miscues piled up in bunches for the Leopards as they suffered an 11-4 loss at the hands of host Titans in Section 3-4A play.
The defeat came hours after BVA (5-5, 5-3) fell by three runs in the first game of a doubleheader.
“This is a good-hitting team,” Watson said, “but we have to be better defensively.”
Following a lengthy COVID-19 shutdown, the doubleheader gave the Leopards their first chance to play in two weeks. BVA’s last game, prior to Thursday, was a 14-4 loss to Thomas Jefferson on April 22.
“We’ve been dealt a tough hand the last couple of weeks with COVID and then you add a few rainouts in there,” Watson said. “It’s been tough and we’ve had to make some adjustments, but the bottom line is we have to be better.”
