The Belle Vernon Area High School is closed for in-person instruction through at least Wednesday due to the number of positive COVID-19 cases in the building.

According to the letter Superintendent Dr. Michele Dowell posted on the district website, there are seven cases of COVID-19 at the high school, forcing the building to be closed under current state guidelines. It was pointed out that when a building is closed, all extracurricular activities for that building are also canceled, so closing the high school means canceled high school sports events until at least Thursday, as well as play rehearsal and other activities.

“Our high school will be the only school closed in the next two days,” said Director Dan Kovatch. “Middle school activities can continue.”

Board President Dan Engstrom implored the public to continue to be vigilant about COVID-19 precautions such as social distancing, wearing masks and using hand sanitizer.

“COVID is not over and we need to be diligent about this. The health of the community directly correlates to the health of our students and the health of our education,” Engstrom said.
