Support continues to pour in for an Elizabeth Township boy injured in a crash involving his bicycle and a car earlier this month.
Dominic Grebur, 10, was riding his bicycle with friends April 9 when he was involved in a collision with a car at the intersection of Greenock-Buena Vista Road and Duncan Station Road. The boy was seriously injured, breaking his femur on one leg and the kneecap on the other, as well as his collarbone. He also suffered a wrist injury, a cracked chin, lost teeth and other injuries.
The community immediately rallied around the family, offering prayers and financial support.
The Savage Gentleman Barbershop in Elizabeth is holding Dominic Days every Tuesday through May 18. On Dominic Days, $5 from every haircut will go directly to the Grebur family, said owner Jonathan Toth, who opened the business in December.
“I grew up in Glassport and it was a community,” he said. “Neighbors would lock each other’s houses, watch each other’s kids.”
Toth said he found that same type of community when he moved to Elizabeth, first in the borough and now to a house in the township with his business in the borough.
“When I opened the business, the community supported me as one of its own,” Toth said.
He didn’t think twice about reaching out to the Grebur family with whatever assistance he could provide. Toth said there will be donation buckets available at his shop for anyone wishing to make a donation without getting a haircut or a donation above the $5 contribution per haircut.
“I saw a kid 10 years old and my heart broke. He could have lost his life,” Toth said. “With all of the craziness in the world, this is what we need to do. We need to be there for one another.”
The community has been there in a big way for Dominic, who has been involved with Elizabeth Forward Youth Athletics since he was 4 years old, starting with T-ball and adding soccer and baseball to his activities as he grew.
The athletic association opened its season over the weekend and held basket raffles and 50/50 drawings at all the games. Association vice president Chris Thoma said $7,500 was raised to go toward Dominic’s medical care.
A GoFundMe account set up days after the accident had raised $12,964 as of Tuesday afternoon.
Dominic’s father, Alex Grebur, has been overwhelmed by the support and has offered his thanks publicly on Facebook.
“From my family we would like to say thank you to everyone who came out yesterday and supported Dominic,” Alex Grebur wrote on the social media site Sunday. “To everyone that has gone above and beyond this last week. The amount of support, love, and prayers are beyond our gratitude. We are so thankful to have friends, family, and this community behind us.”
Alex Grebur said he expects Dominic to be home later this week.
