Coming off a non-section loss to Belle Vernon Wednesday, Frazier head coach Don Hartman was eager to see how his Commodores were going to fare against Carmichaels. Many coaches, including Hartman, think the Mikes are the team to beat in Section 3-2A.
But not so fast.
Commodores freshman Nicole Palmer twirled a gem Thursday scattering only four hits and striking out 10 Mikes batters in a 2-0 win, putting Frazier in the driver seat in the section standings.
“Yes, we’re in the driver’s seat, but there’s still a lot of work to do,” Hartman said. “But our girls, we played a great game. It was a very clean, well-pitched game on both sides. The outfield play by both teams was fantastic.”
Hartman highlighted catches by left fielder Skylar Hone, a great play by Maria Felsher in center and a diving catch by Claire Domonkos in right field to end the game.
“As good as our outfield was, theirs was just as good,” Hartman said. “I’d say they robbed us of at least six, game-changing hits. Both outfields were unconscious.”
The Commodores (5-3, 3-0) picked up both runs in the top of the third inning. Jensyn Hartman delivered a one-out hit and came around to score on an RBI triple by Madison Bednar. She came into score on a Tori Washinski sacrifice fly.
Palmer got into a little trouble in the bottom of the sixth as the Mikes (4-4, 2-1) put two runners on, but with two outs Palmer struck out Emma Hyatt to end the threat.
“Just like in the Charleroi game, Nicole keeps a little in the reserve and just hit a second gear,” Hartman said. “She’s learning me and I’m learning her. But I’ve been really impressed with her coming in as a freshman and taking control in that circle.”
The Commodores are back in action Friday with a section game against Beth-Center at Commodore Park.
Yough 11,
Uniontown 1
The Cougars continued to roll through Section 2-4A, this time with a lopsided win over the Red Raiders.
Emma Augustine picked up the win in the circle for the Cougars (6-1, 3-1) as Sammi McGhee finished with three hits including a double and home run.
Savannah Manns added a triple in the Cougars’ 10-hit attack.
Thursday’s scheduled game with Mt. Pleasant has been postponed, so the Cougars are back in action Monday at Belle Vernon.
Waynesburg 11, South Allegheny 5
The Raiders shelled SA starter Breena Komarnisky for 10 runs and 13 hits over four innings as they rolled to a Section 3-3A win.
Komarnisky was touched up for three home runs, one each by Lilly Rush, Ehralyn Eisiminger and Brooke Coss.
Eisiminger didn’t do it all for the Raiders (5-1, 2-0), but she did go 4 for 4 with a double and six RBIs to go with her homer.
Paige Jones finished with three hits, two doubles, for Waynesburg.
Madison Pikula looked best offensively for the Gladiators (3-3, 0-2), finishing with three hits, including a triple.
SA continues section play Friday at home against McGuffey.
