While 2020 marked the 50th anniversary of Earth Day, area communities are being just as vigilant about observing this year’s ecological event with roadside cleanups.
California area
A new event is being offered by a new nonprofit organization covering the Mon Valley communities in the California Area School District. The group California Area Re:Generations (CARES) is offering incentives for individuals and groups picking up trash in California, Coal Center, Daisytown, Dunlevy, Elco, Roscoe and Blainesburg.
“I have some gift certificates, so I thought let’s do a raffle,” said Lisa Buday, one of the group’s organizers.
Participants in the California area will receive one raffle ticket for each bag of trash collected. Buday said the raffle is open to groups, individuals and students, with prizes so far promised by Subway, Dairy Queen, Starbucks and AMC.
“We’re still soliciting donations from local businesses,” she said.
