Facing a 2-1 count with her team trailing 2-0 in the bottom of the fourth inning, Frazier junior Tori Washinski requested a timeout from the home plate umpire before jogging over to chat with head coach Don Hartman.

The purpose behind the impromptu meeting was simple.

“Tori came down and said, ‘I just want to drop one down here, can I do that?’” Hartman explained. “I said, ‘Yeah, you can drop a bunt down. If that’s what you want to do, go right ahead.’”

Washinski successfully laid one down on the next pitch from Charleroi pitcher Kylie Quigley, raced to first base and forced an errant throw by catcher McKenna DeUnger before advancing to second on the miscue.

The decision by Washinski ended up paying dividends as the Commodores followed with four straight hits and scored all of their runs in a 5-4 victory over the Cougars in Section 3-2A play Friday at Commodore Park in Perryopolis.

“She dropped down a great bunt there and really got everything rolling,” Hartman said. “I give my older players that kind of credit because those girls have been there before. You really like to see that type of thing as a coach.”
