Defense was a point of emphasis during practice for the California baseball team Monday at Malden Yards.
The group worked on positioning and went through various situations to ensure they were fully prepared for what they’d face in their section opener against Carmichaels.
When it came time to put what they practiced into play Tuesday, the Trojans struggled mightily as defensive miscues, mistakes on the basepaths and offensive struggles piled up in a 13-1 five-inning loss to the Mikes in Section 1-2A action.
“I credit this to us not being very good right now,” California head coach Lou Pasquale said. “We acted like we didn’t even go over anything (Monday). It’s very disappointing.”
Pasquale believes his team’s struggles, which began in a 10-5 loss to Class 4A Ringgold on March 29, are associated with the mental aspect of the game.
“Right now, we’re not mentally strong,” he said.
