The Elizabeth Township Commissioners approved three contracts Monday related to the completion of a sewerage project that includes new pump stations in Boston and Buena Vista.
The two new pump stations will allow the township to decommission the current treatment plant in Buena Vista and send the sewage 13 miles through a new pressurized sewer line — or force main —to be treated in McKeesport.
Engineer John Mowry of KLH Engineers, Inc., said the force main project, which runs along the Great Allegheny Passage bike trail, is on schedule.
“We’re to the restoration phase. All the pipe is in the ground on the force main,” Mowry said. “The Elizabeth to McKeesport project is going well so far.”
The next step is to install the new pump stations. Commissioners Monday awarded the general/mechanical contract for the two pump stations to Mele and Mele and Sons, which submitted the low bid of $17,590,000. The electrical contract was awarded to Allegheny City Electrical, which submitted a low bid of $2,242,900.
Commissioners also voted to retain Dave Macioce as the clerk of works for the construction of the pump stations at a rate of $150 per hour.
The township is installing the force main and pump stations to reduce the flow of raw sewage into the Monongahela River from the Buena Vista plant as required under a 2016 consent order with the state Department of Environmental Protection.
