New Charleroi park to be open by July 4

Magic City Riverfront Park is expected to open in time for the Fourth of July.

The project, spearheaded by the Mon Valley Alliance, will be at the site of Charleroi’s former Cougar Stadium, which was demolished nearly three years ago.

Alliance CEO Ben Brown signed a $254,000 contract with Tedesco Construction Company of White Oak last week to complete the project, which will transform the vacant lot into a riverfront oasis for residents looking to connect with the water or enjoy a sunny afternoon.

The project will be paid for using funding through Local Share Account funding secured by the Alliance in 2018 for the Charleroi Renaissance Project, funding from the Department of Conservation and Natural Resources and a $10,000 grant recently received through the Washington County Tourism Promotion Agency.

LSA funding is generated through gaming at the Meadows Racetrack & Casino in North Strabane Township.

The first phase of the Charleroi Renaissance Project was demolition of the stadium in 2018. That project removed lighting, light pole bases, a wall in front of the property, chain-link fencing, goal posts, netting, a scoreboard, a storage building and railings to prep the site for future development.

It took three years to find proper funding, but Brown is excited to see the space begin to transform over the next few weeks.
