Charleroi could not have picked a more impressive way to christen the new softball field on the high school/middle school campus.

Exploding for 24 runs on 22 hits, the Cougars blasted Washington, 24-0, in a Section 3-2A opener that was called after two and a half innings.

The Cougars (1-1, 1-0) sent 18 batters to the plate in the first inning, scoring 14 runs on 11 hits. The hosts followed that up with 10 runs on 11 hit with 16 batters in the second inning.

When it was over, Charleroi coach Trey Tilghman admitted to feeling sorry for the Prexies (0-1, 0-1) who had just nine players, several of whom were playing their first varsity game.

“I felt bad for them,” Tilghman said. “I’ve been on the other side of tough games, but nothing like this. Our girls really kept hitting the ball and I couldn’t tell them not to swing.”
