Charleroi Area School District: Volunteers make sure students have treats for Easter

More than 200 students in the Charleroi Area School District will receive Easter treats this week thanks to the members of the school board.
Director Thomas Nutting spearheads several programs each year for students, including a Stuff-the-Bus event for back to school and a gift drive around the holidays.
With money left over from programs last year and many families still struggling because of the pandemic, Nutting thought it would be helpful to use the funds to make sure students have something special to enjoy this Easter.
“I thought it would be nice to do because some of our students might not have an Easter,” he said. “They might not get candy or have a basket.”
With help from his colleagues, they purchased bubbles, Play-Doh, plastic eggs and candy to pack into this week’s annual Harvest Bounty bags.
The Harvest Bounty program is run by volunteers in the district to supply nonperishable breakfast and lunch foods, fruit and snacks that students in kindergarten through eighth grades take home each Friday.
About 200 bags were packed Friday with help from community volunteers, school board directors and administrators, while life skills students from Tammy Hite’s class stopped by to sell coffee to those packing the bags with candy and toys.
“My fellow board members really showed up to help me with this,” Nutting said. “They were there at 9 a.m. ready to go. And (Superintendent) Dr. (Ed) Zelich, who is so busy running an entire school system, dropped what he was doing to help us pack, too. It was nice to see so much support for the kids.”
