Big’s Sanitation will handle N. Charleroi garbage service

Big’s Sanitation will take over refuse service in North Charleroi May 1.

The borough’s current contract with County Hauling has expired, but it was extended because the COVID-19 pandemic pushed back council’s ability to vote on a renewal.

During a special meeting Monday night, the borough unanimously accepted a bid from Big’s, which was the apparent low bidder.

Waste Management and County Hauling also submitted bids.

Big’s five-year contract will keep garbage rates the same for residents, at least for the next few years.

Current annual rates are $148 if discounted, a $163 flat rate or $203 if paid late.

Bills are expected to be sent out in April and must be paid by mail because of restrictions due to the pandemic.

Councilman Dave Diess said rates should stay the same, but might need to be re-evaluated eventually.

Under the new contract, rates for garbage collection will start at $12.95 per month per customer. Rates would continue at that level for three years and then increase to $13.25 for the fourth and fifth year of the contract. Any extension years would increase to $13.50.

“It was a good bid, and a very fair bid,” Diess said. “Rates will be able to stay the same, which are affordable, for the coming years but might have to be evaluated down the line. But for now, they will stay the same.”
