Vice chair outlines grievances with Monessen’s rec board

Despite having three of its five members resign Wednesday, the remaining members of the Monessen Recreation Board chose to hold its regularly scheduled meeting that night.

The meeting was live-streamed on Mayor Matt Shorraw’s Facebook page.

The board’s vice chair, Valarie Weible, opened by saying they didn’t have a quorum and therefore couldn’t have a meeting.

However, she said, she was going to read some correspondence anyway. The correspondence, Weible said, was just her “thoughts on some things.”

Treasurer ReAnna Merritt was also there, but did not speak. There were several people off camera who could briefly be heard, but also didn’t speak publicly.

Weible said she’s taught in the Monessen School District for 30 years and is a lifelong resident of the city who has volunteered throughout her life, including 35 years with Mon Valley Youth and Teen.

Weible said she was asked to join the board by Merritt and agreed “for the sole purpose of creating activities for the youth and our community.”
