Mon Valley Paws plans to hold a dog or cat food drive that starts Monday at Monessen Public Library.
Food drive Chairwoman Sharon Lewgood said in July 2019, the most recent data available, 68% of American families own pets.
“Because of the pandemic and the resulting economic downturn, some of the families in our area are struggling to take care of their pets,” Lewgood said. “Some are even forced to give them up. If you are a pet owner, you know that surrendering your pet can be emotionally devastating for both you and the animal. We at Mon Valley Paws would like to help these fur babies to stay in their homes by providing pet supplies to the families in need.”
Anyone who would like to help with the drive can make donations of — dry dog or cat food (nothing heavier than 20 pounds), wet dog or cat food, dog or cat treats and kitty litter.
Items will be collected at Monessen Public Library from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday, from noon to 5 p.m. Tuesday and March 25 and from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Wednesday and March 27.
Items will be collected at Hilltop Fire Station from noon to 5 p.m. March 26 and from 2 to 5 p.m. March 27.
Pet supplies will be distributed to families from 1 p.m. until they’re all gone on April 6 in the parking lot across the street from the Salvation Army Mon Valley Citadel in Monessen.
Anyone who would like more information, would like to join or to make a donation to the nonprofit can check out the Facebook page at www.facebook.com/Mon-ValleyPaws or the group’s website at monvalleypaws.wordpress.com. The website has a Paypal option for donors.
Checks can be mailed to Mon Valley Paws, PO Box 47, Monessen, PA 15062.
