Paving on White Oak’s agenda

White Oak council is expected to vote on awarding a paving project at tonight’s meeting and to discuss what to do with a large pile of old asphalt millings.

At last week’s workshop meeting, engineer Ken Hillman told council the 2021 paving contract bids are in, and he’s recommending awarding the bid to Plum-based Tresco paving, which came in with the lowest bid at $855,580.

At a meeting in January, council said it hopes to pave multiple streets, including Andrew, Circle, Maple, Longvue, Sunset and Terrace drives, Chesapeake and Main streets, Laurel Lane, Stepanik Road and others.

Hillman last week said council asked him to look into the cost of adding two streets — Vermont Avenue from State Street to Congress Street and Auld Street from Lincoln Way to the border of the property of the former White Oak School, which is owned by McKeesport Area School District — to the paving project this year.

Utilizing the prices that were provided in the bids for the paving project, Hillman estimates it would cost another $168,555 to add the two roads to this year’s paving project.

“The prices they provided us this year are really good,” Hillman said of Tresco, also reminding council that Tresco completed last year’s paving project.

“A lot of the items are cheaper than last year,” Hillman said. “So if council would want to consider that, it would be recommended to go ahead and add those couple streets on.”

“We looked at those two roads based upon our evaluation mapping,” Borough Manager John Palyo said.  “This was done with prioritization, in discussion with public works and viewing roads that we know needed to get done. That’s kind of why we chose those two particular roads.”
