North Charleroi: Council considers garbage contract

North Charleroi Council will soon decide who will take care of refuse service in the borough.

The borough’s contract with County Hauling was extended because the COVID-19 pandemic pushed back council’s ability to vote on a renewal. The contract will expire at the end of this year.

Council received three new bids for the service, which will offer a contract for five years with two option years for an extension.

Of those who bid for the job — County Hauling, Big’s Sanitation and Waste Management — it appeared to council on Monday that Big’s Sanitation has come in as the low bidder.

Big’s will offer the borough a five-year contract with rates for garbage collection starting at $12.95 per month per customer. Rates would continue at that rate for three years and then increase to $13.25 for the fourth and fifth year of the contract.  Extension years would increase to $13.50.

Council’s sanitation committee will vet all qualified bidders and will further discuss the contract at a special meeting later this month, which has not yet been scheduled.
