Washington County: Economic progress in year of pandemic outlined

A year after the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, Washington County officials are eager to see the economy bounce back stronger than ever before.
Commissioners Larry Maggi and Nick Sherman and Chairwoman Diana Irey Vaughan got together virtually Thursday for an annual State of the Economy presentation sponsored by Community Bank. The event focused on the economic position of the county as hope builds that the pandemic will end soon.
Joined by local business leaders and members of the Washington Chamber of Commerce, which hosted the event, the board said the county has found a way to survive despite the struggles of the past year.
“We had significant impacts because of the closure orders and stay-at-home orders,” Irey Vaughan said. “It has been challenging for all industries, especially our small businesses and the hospitality industry. We filed litigation against the governor on behalf of our citizens, trying to fight back against the impact they had on our communities. Still, we have had a few successes. And there has been growth.”
