The South Allegheny boys basketball team is back in the WPIAL Class 3A semifinals for the second consecutive year. But this year’s team is looking for a different result than in 2020.

The No. 1 Gladiators (16-4) host No. 4 Aliquippa tonight with a berth in the 3A final at stake.

Last season, SA hung with North Catholic for three quarters before falling 51-40 at North Hills High School.

The Quips (12-5) enter the contest coming off a 59-50 win over No. 12 Laurel. They also beat No. 13 New Brighton, 72-42, in the first round. South Allegheny coach Tony DiCenzo expects Aliquippa to be his team’s greatest challenge in the playoffs to date.

“They are a typical Aliquippa team; they are athletic, they play hard and you’re going to get pressure from them,” DiCenzo said. “They’re usually playing every year during this time of the season, so they’re going to be battle tested. This moment is not going to be too big for them.”
