H. Vaughn “Pap” Gilbert Sr., 89, of Elizabeth Township, passed away Tuesday, March 9, 2021. He was born Aug. 29, 1931, in Christy Park and was the son of the late Elizabeth Vaughn and David S. Gilbert Sr. He was the husband of 60 years to the late Shirley Ann Sandmeyer Gilbert, who passed away June 10, 2012. Vaughn was in the U.S. Naval Reserves. He was an active member of Greenock United Methodist Church and a life member of the Central Volunteer Fire Department. Vaughn was an amazing carpenter and cabinet maker and lent his talents and skills to many family members, friends, his church and firehall over the years. He was the owner of over 25 years of the former Wood Products Supply and retired as a kitchen designer at the Sutersville Lumber Company. He coached Little League baseball for the former Central Athletic Association. He built over 600 homes in Elizabeth Township and elsewhere. He was also a member of the Buena Vista Firehall social club and The WMBU Hall. Vaughn and his wife, Shirley, shared many lifelong friends in a group fondly called “The Card Club.” He is survived by sons, Vaughn (Debbie) Gilbert Jr. and Larry (Janet) Gilbert; daughters, Cindy (David) Obley and Lori Gilbert; grandchildren, Mike (Katie) Obley, Nicole (Dan) Ellingsen, Grant Gilbert, Maggie (Stevie) Gilbert and McKenna Gilbert; great-grandchildren, Noah and Kendall Obley, Carly, Abby and Shane Ellingsen and Layla Bornyas; special nieces, Kristie (Chip) Krznaric and Shellie (Luke) Kuchma; sisters, Dora Mae (the late Carl) Barker and Elizabeth “Libby” Raczkowski; brother-in-law, Jack Greenewald; sisters-in-law, Linda (John) Peduzzi, Bonnie Gilbert and Janet (the late Allan) Sandmeyer; and nieces and nephews. In addition to his wife and parents; he was preceded in death by his sisters, Gene (the late Daryl) Railingshafer, Fern Gilbert, Margaret (the late “Red”) Brewster and Dorothy Greenewald; and brothers, David S. (the late Dorothy) Gilbert Jr. and Richard C. Gilbert; and brother-in-law, Richard “Pete” Sandmeyer. Friends are welcome from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, March 11, at GILBERT FUNERAL HOME AND CREMATORY INC., 6028 Smithfield St., Boston, Elizabeth Township, 412-751-5000, Drew J. Gilbert, Director. Funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, March 12, at The Greenock United Methodist Church, 1213 Greenock Buena Vista Road, McKeesport, PA 15135, with the Rev. Lori Walters, officiating. Interment will follow at the Peace Lutheran Cemetery, Greenock. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Greenock United Methodist Church, 1213 Greenock Buena Vista Road, McKeesport, PA 15135.
