Charleroi Area High School and Middle School students will return to remote learning after a recent spike in COVID-19 cases.
Superintendent Dr. Ed Zelich said the school was notified around 2 p.m. Wednesday that two additional students tested positive for COVID-19, bringing the total number of cases in the building to four within the past 10 days.
Guidelines set by the state Department of Education require the building to close based on a 14-day rolling period, which begins with the first positive case in each facility.
Students in the high school and middle school will switch to remote-only instruction today through Friday and will return to in-person learning Monday.
Because there are not active COVID-19 cases at the Charleroi Area Elementary Center, the building will remain open for in-person instruction.
The students, staff and teachers are scheduled to return to the building Monday. However, any new cases may require remote learning to be extended.
A new 14-day rolling period will begin when students return to school.
During the closure, athletic events and extracurricular activities scheduled at Charleroi Area High School and Middle School will be canceled. They will resume Monday.
This is the second time this year the middle/high school has been required to close for a deep cleaning because of positive cases.
The first closure occurred in February and lasted for four days.
