There will be a new representative on North Belle Vernon council through the remainder of this year.

On Tuesday, council agreed to appoint Alia Horner to a seat left vacant by former councilman R.J. Sokol in February.

Sokol, a long-time councilman, submitted a letter of resignation in January that was effective Feb. 8.

Sokol was instrumental in parks and recreation, spearheading the effort to fix up North Belle Vernon Community Bank Park, which has received accolades for creating opportunities and a safe environment for children across the region.

Two letters of interest were submitted to fill the seat, Council President Brett Berish said.

The term will expire at the end of this year.

After her swearing in ceremony, Horner was appointed to sit on the parks and recreation committee with current councilwoman Paula Usher, who has been working for the last several months to find a way to safely implement community events.

“It was nice for us to see a young person who wants to be involved in her community,” Berish said. “We are happy to welcome new, fresh ideas to the borough. We are as excited to have her as she is to be here.”
