Despite the fact that his team was eliminated from the WPIAL Class 5A playoffs last month, Ringgold senior Demetrius Butler made history Monday night.
Butler scored a game-high 34 points and became the ninth Ringgold boys player to score 1,000 career points in a 69-63 non-section loss to Frazier.
“This means the world to me. This last year has been extremely difficult for students everywhere but especially for competitive athletes,” Butler said. “Being able to reach this accomplishment after months of not even knowing if I would have a senior season is unexplainable. I’ll always have a special place in my heart for (athletic director) Laura Grimm and Coach (Eugene) Wilson for helping this become a reality for me.”
In addition to joining the 1,000-point club, Butler also became the all-time leader in games played.
“When I saw Meech get his 1,000th point, the first thing I thought of is how this couldn’t have happened to a better kid. The second thing I thought about was his mother, Amanda, and how she has done an excellent job raising this kid into the young man he is today,” Wilson said. “I was happy to see how proud she was for her son. It made me proud to be the coach at the time of this great achievement in their lives.”
Nick Peccon added 19 points for the Rams (5-12).
Luke Santo led the Commodores (18-4) with 27 points, while Owen Newcomer contributed with five 3-pointers and 20 points. Colton Arison chipped in with a 10-point night.
