Warmer temperatures and rain over the weekend caused snow to melt and forced some Mon Valley waterways to run over into businesses, residents’ basements and onto roadways.
Despite some flooding, officials said the damage wasn’t as bad as projected.
According to meteorologist Pat Herald at the National Weather Service in Pittsburgh, the rain is over for the week and the Mon River was expected to crest at midnight Monday.
“It should drop below flood stage by Tuesday evening,” Herald said. “Overall, it doesn’t look as bad as we had initially anticipated for points along the Monongahela River.”
Herald said the river was expected to crest about two to three feet above flood stage at both Charleroi and Elizabeth. Flood stage at Charleroi is 28 feet, with the river expected to crest at 30.9 feet. Flood stage at Elizabeth is 20 feet, with the crest expected at 22.7 feet. Herald said some basement and street flooding should be expected at sites along both pools of the river.
“With the river level at 22.7 feet in Elizabeth, West Elizabeth will see some basement flooding. With Charleroi at 30.9 feet, Pigeon Creek will have back flooding and Peno’s Plaza (in Monongahela) will have flooding, as will Armstrong Park,” Herald said.
