Rostraver turns down grant for historical society

A Rostraver business can’t give its money away, at least not to the township.
Noble Environmental, which does business at 111 Conner Lane along with County Hauling and the Westmoreland Sanitary Landfill, recently approached the Rostraver Historical Society with an offer to give the nonprofit group a grant if it could first provide the endorsement of local elected officials.
The township owns the historical society’s building.
Commission President John Lorenzo said he spoke with Stu Boyd of the historical society. Lorenzo said the conditions of the funding raised red flags for the historical society.
“They don’t want to be tied to them regardless of the grant opportunity,” Lorenzo said. “We own the building and the historical society doesn’t want any ties to Noble Environmental.”
Lorenzo said Noble Environmental had approached the township a few months ago offering $50,000 to be used for either the police department or for recreation in the township. Lorenzo said the township didn’t hesitate in refusing the money.
“We’d rather they used the money to sweep Tyrol Boulevard,” Lorenzo said.
The township and area residents have been at odds with County Hauling and Waste Management regarding mud being dragged onto Tyrol Boulevard from the landfill site as well as over odor complaints from uncovered trash.
