After compiling a 12-0 record and winning its fourth consecutive section title, the Serra Catholic girls basketball team will enter the WPIAL’s open tournament as one of the top seeds in Class 2A.

The Eagles, who still have another section game on their schedule against Carmichaels Thursday, were presented with the No. 2 seed as tournament brackets were revealed Tuesday.

Head coach Bill Cleary’s group will host the winner of a preliminary round matchup between No. 15 Sto-Rox (5-12) and No. 18 South Side Area (4-12) in the first round Tuesday at 6 p.m.

California was named the No. 8 seed in 2A and will host No. 9 Fort Cherry (10-7), the second-place team from Section 3, in the first round 6 p.m. Tuesday.

The Trojans (9-3), who have now won three straight games after defeating Frazier Tuesday, finished the regular season as the second place team from Section 2. Cal’s lone section loss of the season came at the hands of Serra Catholic on Feb. 18.

No. 19 Frazier (4-13) is the third local team in the 2A bracket and will face No. 14 Chartiers-Houston (8-6) in a preliminary round game noon Saturday.

The Commodores are the fifth-place team out of Section 2 and have won two of their last three games. Frazier will have a chance to make it three wins in its last four with a victory over Beth-Center tonight.

Behind Serra Catholic, Thomas Jefferson was the local team seeded next highest as the Jaguars were given the No. 4 seed in the Class 5A bracket.
