An ongoing streets project in Dunlevy has received a funding boost from the Mon Valley Alliance Foundation, despite being on hold.
The $10,549 grant will go toward the new Walnut Street Extension/Rail Crossing, which aims to address safety concerns and create new access to the borough.
When completed, the project will install a new railroad crossing at the borough’s property line coming from Charleroi.
The new crossing will have updated features such as safety arms and lights to enhance safety, while the other crossings at Frick and Dewey streets will be closed.
The Frick Street crossing may be used for emergency purposes.
A new entryway will also be erected on state Route 88 and will be called the Walnut Street extension. Side streets will also be repaved from state Route 88 to the tracks.
Council President Becky Hammond said the project began several years ago and has been held by a lack of communication with the railroad.
“We are on hold right now,” Hammond said. “The railroad just has not been getting back to us, so it has been a bit frustrating. So while this project has been going on for years, there really is not an update right now.”
Hammond said a base has been set for the project and adjoining roads, but the borough is waiting for approval from the railroad before a hired paving company can tart its work on the project.
The company purchased additional insurance to complete the paving. That insurance has expired and will need to be reinstated before the work can begin after the railroad gives the OK.
