Hilltop residents play in the snow — without going outside

Many Mon Valley residents are fed up with winter precipitation, but not those at Monongahela Valley Hospital’s Residence at Hilltop in Carroll Township.

They had a ball this week thanks to the snow.

The residents awoke Wednesday to a note on the activities board stating they were going to build snowmen.

“When was the last time you played in the snow?” Activities Director Mary Stine asked the residents later that morning.

A bit puzzled, the group of senior citizens began to open up — realizing it’s been decades since they’ve frolicked in the snow. They reflected on building snowmen, sled riding and snowball fights in their youths and when their children were growing up.

Each resident was seated in front of a dining tray, and the staff came in with buckets of snow.

“We got the idea from Facebook,” Stine said. “We get a lot of our ideas online.

“This is the kind of activity you can’t exactly put on the calendar because you don’t always know when it’s going to snow. We figured — since we had all this snow — why not?”
