This past week marked the first time in Sheleta Camarda-Webb’s 30 year career with California University of Pennsylvania that she has held just one job title; and she’s never been busier.

On Feb. 15, Camarda-Webb became the university’s interim chief diversity, equity and inclusion officer. She will lead the Office of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion and serve on the executive leadership team, known as the President’s Cabinet.

Camarda-Webb holds a bachelor’s degree in social work and master’s degree in secondary education/social science, both from Cal U. She has been employed at the university since 1991, when she was hired as a residence hall director.

She has filled a variety of roles in student affairs, residence life and diversity education.

Throughout her career, Camarda-Webb’s work has focused on LGBTQA+ issues, power and privilege, race and cultural identity. She has advocated for and informed university policies around topics such as the use of preferred names and gender-inclusive restrooms and housing.

Camarda-Webb has been director of the university’s DEI Office since 2015, when it was known as the Office of Multicultural Affairs.

“Diversity and inclusion has always been part of the Cal U fabric; it’s nothing new,” Camarda-Webb said.

What is new is moving it to the forefront as a cabinet-level position, building an intentional strategic plan for diversity, equity and inclusion.

“This position infuses diversity, equity and inclusion from the top down,” Camarda-Webb said. “When I was a student here, it was always part of housing and student affairs.”
